London Marathon runners raise money for Newham homeless charity

27th April 2015
A local running duo have raised over £5,000 for Newham homeless charity Caritas Anchor House, by completing the London Marathon this Sunday.

Greg Fernett and Dominic Biagioni joined 35,000 people at the event as they ran to raise money for Caritas Anchor House, a local charity which helps those affected by homelessness to turn their lives around.

“It’s been an exciting but quite exhausting process,” said Greg upon completing the event in less than five hours. “We have been training for weeks to prepare ourselves for the event, so we’re both so happy we’ve crossed the finish line in under our target time! But to be able to cross it while helping homeless adults in East London is even better.”

“Caritas Anchor House does amazing work in Newham,” said Dominic. “They are seeking funds to expand their services and help more and more people experiencing homelessness and social exclusion in Newham. It’s a fantastic charity and I’m proud to have been able to help them. We both thank everyone who sponsored us.”

The money raised will go directly to Caritas Anchor House and allow them to support people affected by homelessness, substance abuse, mental health, domestic violence and crime.

Keith Fernett, CEO at Caritas Anchor House, was there to meet Greg and Dominic at the finish line.

“Everyone at Caritas is extremely grateful to Greg and Dominic for taking on the challenge of running the marathon, and to everyone who sponsored them. As the demand for our services continues to rise, it is vital we are able to meet our funding targets, and the money raised will make a huge difference to all of our residents.”

Based in East London, Caritas Anchor House provides accommodation to over 230 people each year, and records over 17,000 members of the Newham community using their services to improve their education, secure employment and ultimately gain the skills and confidence to live independently.

Caritas Anchor House is currently in the midst of redeveloping their site as part of their Home and Hope Appeal, which will see the existing accommodation refurbished, training facilities expanded and the building of 25 new “move on” flats.

Caritas Anchor House, a residential and life skills centre, addresses the root causes of homelessness – such as poor education, drug or alcohol addiction, mental health problems, domestic violence or offending – and create sustainable solutions that ensure the people they help will never find themselves in that situation again. The charity is located in Canning Town, in the London Borough of Newham, the second most deprived borough in England.
