Local pupils sleep rough for homeless charity

2nd March 2015
A sponsored sleepout by students at Quwwat Ul Islam Girls School, Forest Gate, has raised over £800 for local homeless charity Caritas Anchor House.

Following a workshop on homelessness, given by the charity, the year 11 students swapped their warm beds for sleeping bags on the floor of the school hall in an effort to better understand the experiences of homeless people.

“It was a real eye-opener for me,” said Momina, one of the students who took part in the event. “Sleeping on the floor was a struggle, but at least we still had our friends around to enjoy the night with. Many homeless people have lost everything, be it their job, family, friends, or home.”

The pupils spent a small part of the night outside in zero degrees temperatures, and said it made them realise just how hard life must be without a roof over your head.

Talking about what she thought could be done, Momina said, “What homeless people need is support and help from people privileged enough to have what they don’t. It’s our job to prevent this and support our fellow citizens because if we were in their position we would want exactly the same thing.”

The funds raised from the sleepout will be donated Caritas Anchor House and will go towards helping them support those affected by homelessness, substance abuse, mental health, domestic violence and crime.

The Principal of Quwwat-Ul-Islam Girls School, Mohammed Asif, is very proud of his students. “It was amazing to see our students engage with the workshop and really get to understand some of the issues facing homeless people in Newham,” he said. “They were inspired to do the sleepout and raise awareness and money for this worthwhile cause."
