Hike raises nearly £7,000 for Newham homeless charity

3rd December 2014
A team of five friends have raised nearly £7,000 for a Newham homeless charity in a trek across the foothills of Annapurna.

Keith Fernett, Graham and Eleanor Toms and Ken and Lila Winger were hiking to raise funds for Caritas Anchor House, a charity which supports people affected by homelessness, drug and alcohol misuse, mental health, domestic violence and crime.

"It was fantastic, but exhausting," said Keith, who is the Director of Caritas Anchor House. "We were up at 6am most mornings and covered several miles each day. At one point we had to run away from a tiger and there were a few memorable encounters with the mountain’s monkeys.”

"The money we've raised makes it all worth it, though, and I'm extremely grateful to everyone who has donated. As Director of a homeless charity I see first hand the struggles some of the most vulnerable people in our society go through and this money will make a huge difference to their lives."

Caritas Anchor House has already made quite an impact on those that it helps. Every year, over 230 people use their services to improve their education, gain employment and ultimately make the move into independent living. On top of this, the charity set up a rough sleepers unit in Stratford this year, which has so far helped over 80 people.

The aim of Caritas Anchor House is to address the root causes of homelessness and create sustainable solutions ensure their residents have the chance of a better future. The quality of their work and dedication to helping those in need led to them being Highly Commended this year as a Social Champion at the Charity Times Awards and praised in the House of Lords as having ‘diversified and begun operating in new and creative ways’.

Caritas Anchor House is a social action charity, supporting people affected by homelessness, drug and alcohol misuse, mental health, domestic violence and crime. We are a registered charity providing accommodation and support for over 220 single homeless people each year aged 19 to 65, aiming to give them so much more than just a roof over their heads. We offer education and training resources, as well as wellbeing activities, for both our homeless residents, and vulnerable and marginalised adults in the local community, giving them the skills and confidence they need to rebuild their lives.

Caritas Anchor House is located in Canning Town, in the London Borough of Newham, the third most deprived borough in England and Wales.
