Understanding changes to benefits

5th September 2018
People can experience financial hardship at any time for many different reasons.

The welfare system exists to support people on low incomes and those with specific needs. However, many of those who are struggling are still not aware they could be entitled to claim benefits, or are deterred by the complexities of the system.

That’s why this month, Mind in Tower Hamlets and Newham will host a presentation to help explain what financial support is available and how you can access it.

There have been recent changes to the welfare system which changes the way people access their benefits. This includes Universal Credit, a new benefit which was introduced in Newham in July this year, which replaces some of the benefits and tax credits that you might be getting now. Also, Personal Independence Payments (PIP), which helps with the extra costs of an illness, disability or mental health condition, are gradually replacing Disability Living Allowance (DLA).

The presentation is an opportunity for professionals, service users and interested members of the public to find about more about the changes and the impact of them. It is being facilitated by Sami Basha, a very experienced and skilled specialist Welfare and Benefits Advisor based at Mind in Tower Hamlets & Newham (MITHN). Caritas Anchor House has a long running working relationship with Sami and has benefited enormously from his specialist knowledge, advocacy for residents and information sharing with keyworkers here.

It will be held on Friday 21st September 2018, 11.00-13.00, at Mind in Tower Hamlets and Newham, 13 Whitethorn Street, Bow, London E3 4DA. The address can be seen on a map here: https://goo.gl/maps/87R2iydmR2Q2
