Shortlisted as a Housing Hero!

19th April 2018
We are delighted to announce that we are finalists in the Housing Heroes Awards 2018 in the category of ‘Inclusive Team of the Year’!

The Housing Heroes Awards are organised by the Chartered Institute of Housing and Inside Housing, and designed to celebrate hard work and stand-out individuals and teams across the housing sector.

This year, we are delighted to have the diversity and inclusivity of our staff recognised. Our staff team has 42 members across six departments, of whom, 11 have overcome homelessness at Caritas Anchor House. We could not be more proud of this statistic which reflects what we value most; supporting and empowering people to learn, grow and build healthier, more economically independent lives for themselves.

In five of our six departments, at least one staff member has direct experience of homelessness. Not only does this make us exceptionally proud of the confidence, life skills and employability our teams facilitate, but is a testament to the inspiring nature of the work we do, and the respect our residents hold for Caritas Anchor House.

For example, our kitchen provides the most homely comforts with three hot meals a day. One of the team members is Patrick, who left his job as a floor layer to become a full-time carer for his mother with dementia. Patrick was devastated when she passed away in 2016, and soon after, was evicted from the family home and became homeless.

Patrick arrived at Caritas Anchor House in January 2017 and began volunteering with our kitchen team, and has since progressed to become a valued member of our staff team.

Patrick said, "When I started volunteering in the kitchen I really started to get my confidence back on track. My main success is getting the Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety in Catering certificate. That may sound trivial to many, but to me it was a huge achievement. I felt proud and still do, and that’s down to Caritas Anchor House."

We are keeping our fingers crossed until Monday 25th June, where the winners will be announced at the Housing Heroes Awards Ceremony, and look forward to celebrating the achievements of the housing sector.
