The shared society - Prime Minister commits to mental health investment

10th January 2017

Responding to PM Theresa May’s speech, Keith Fernett, Chief Executive of Caritas Anchor House, said:

“Caritas Anchor House welcomes the Prime Minister’s speech on Monday 9 January. In a society where a staggering 1 in 4 of us will experience poor mental health each year, her pledge to “transform the way we deal with mental health problems” is promising.

“At Caritas Anchor House, over a third of those we support have mental health needs, and we recognise that improving people’s mental health is a key part of transforming their lives. That’s why we have a dedicated Mental Health Lead within our Personal Development Team and continually offer a range of activities to promote healthy mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.

“People who have mental health needs should get the support they need at all times in their lives – not just as a last resort in hospital. The government seems to have realised that by committing to improve mental health support in schools, the workplace and putting more of a focus on community care.

“However, there must be dedicated funding in place to ensure these much needed and long overdue commitments are fulfilled. It is only with proper, long term investments in all kinds of mental health services that we can support those who need it most.”
