Caritas Anchor House

Working at the heart of homelessness

Responding to a changing environment

Our News in Brief

Responding to a changing environment

11th October 2016
Over the last quarter, Caritas Anchor House has continued to adapt our ways of working to meet the ever changing service requirements made of ourselves. Our results over the last three months have begun to show the implications of these changes.

Caritas Anchor House is commissioned to provide services for individuals with low to medium needs; however, increasingly our residents have one or more complex needs, including drug and alcohol misuse, mental health, offending and domestic abuse. We have also seen an increase of residents on Employment Support Allowance and those aged over 55, many of whom have been made homeless due to evictions from landlords seeking higher rents.

The London Borough of Newham, where we are based, has featured nationally as one of the most problematic boroughs for housing and homeless issues. It has recently been revealed that Newham has the highest number of people living in homeless accommodation in the country.

We are pleased that despite the external pressures, we are continuing to ensure positive outcomes for our residents and have supported 24 into independent living over the past three months. Your Space and St Marks Community Centre - both run by Caritas Anchor House - have expanded their vital provision of services in our local community.

Over the last three months to 30th September 2016:

  • 24 residents moved out of Caritas Anchor House into independent living
  • 6 residents gained employment
  • 601 volunteering sessions were undertaken
  • 90% of residents had Personal Development Plans
  • We maintained a 99% occupancy rate
