Our News in Brief

National Volunteers Week – Thank you to all our fantastic volunteers!

6th June 2022
It is National Volunteers’ Week. From corporate supporters, community members and resident volunteers, we are so grateful for the time and dedication generously given to help both residents and staff. To highlight some of their amazing work, here are few examples of our incredible volunteers.

East London Business Alliance (ELBA):

ELBA builds connects businesses with local communities, bringing the time, skills and resources of the private sector, to help build the capacity of local organisations, support young people in education and place people into employment in London. ELBA have been providing Caritas Anchor House with professional mentors who volunteer to help our staff with their personal development.

One such mentor is Piere from Société Générale. Piere meets our Head of Community Partnerships Naomi Mullings to offer her tips and guidance on management and how to build trust in the team effectively.

Naomi said:

“My monthly mentor meeting with Piere has been fantastic for my personal development. He has offered me some great tips on ways I can handle certain situations and build up trust in my team. Huge thanks to ELBA for setting this up. I have more confidence in my decision making, a stronger vision of what I am want to do with my team and can now see the bigger picture better. To have someone like Piere as a mentor is invaluable for me.”

Anya Rudolphy, Community Development Project Manager at ELBA, said:

ELBA have worked with Caritas Anchor House for many years offering capacity building support and workshops with volunteers from our business partners. I think we sit in a fortunate place to offer business volunteers the chance to learn more about the challenges faced in the third sector during their time volunteering while also utilising their professional skills, building stronger connections between businesses and the East London community.

Resident Volunteer - Tasian

Tasian kindly gives up her time in the afternoon to collect food donations for her fellow residents. A huge thank you to Canning Town Pret who donate their surplus stock at the end of every day.

Tasian said:

“Pret are very generous and give us loads of fresh food for us. The staff at Caritas Anchor House have actually given me an extra trolley, as we get given so much food we can’t fit it all in the paper bags! I decided to start doing some volunteering two months ago. It feels good to give something back, as the team has done so much for me.”

Volunteer Yoga Instructor - Allison Kavanagh

For the past year, residents have been getting an outdoor free weekly yoga sessions by volunteer instructor Allison. This has been such an important class for our resident to unwind and improve their mental wellbeing, particularly during lockdown. Allison teaches flow yoga which uses techniques and positions from Vinyasa Yoga - a style of yoga characterised by stringing postures together so that you move from one to another, seamlessly, using breathing techniques.

Allison said:

“Teaching yoga at Caritas Anchor House has been such a lovely way to meet people in the community, make friends, and it has been so gratifying to see how the residents have taken to the sessions.  I will miss everyone and our sessions greatly! I'm so pleased Oriana is able to continue offering yoga to the residents and I know she'll do a fantastic job.”

During the past year, we’ve seen a countless number of selfless contributions from so many generous people who support us with their time and skills, to help make a difference. From helping to set up our food bank, to hosting CV workshops, doing virtual mock interviews over Zoom, gardening in our courtyards and even offering haircuts to residents - we cannot thank our volunteers enough for their incredible support.
