Inspiring Change : International Women's Day 2014

8th March 2014

Saturday 8th March is International Women’s Day 2014, an opportunity to both mark the achievements of women and call for women's equality and advancement worldwide.

In 2014, the theme is 'Inspiring Change', something we at Caritas Anchor House are keen to achieve. Homelessness can be a devastating experience for anyone, and for those who have fled domestic violence or suffer from mental health issues or substance misuse, life can seem hopeless.

The women we support have often lost not only their homes, but their self-belief. Our Lifestyle Architects support them to address their problems, and through training, education and rehabilitation, to make a change and reclaim their lives - just like Emma did.

Emma was fleeing domestic violence when she arrived at Caritas Anchor House twelve months ago. Having been studying for a degree in health service management and international development studies, she was quite ambitious.

“I’d been deputy manager at a supported living home, and I wanted to go further. Instead, I suddenly found myself homeless and unemployed. I stayed briefly with a neighbour until Newham Council referred me here.” Since moving in, Emma has been gradually getting her life back together.

“This place is unique,” she says. “They expect a lot of you, but they support you to do it. When I first arrived, I had lost my confidence and was really unsure of myself, but they helped me believe in myself again.

“I’ve been taking courses, done some volunteering and completed a back to work placement. Recently I started applying for jobs again, and it felt great. For the first time in a while, I’m looking forward to the future.”

With your help, we can support more women like Emma to get back into independent living, and reclaim their self-esteem and confidence. To donate, please give us a call on 0207 476 6062 or click the link below.
