Grainger plc Give and Gain at Caritas Anchor House

20th May 2016
Today, Caritas Anchor House hosted a team of enthusiastic volunteers from Grainger Plc who visited the charity to take part in the ninth annual Give and Gain Day.

The staff from Grainger Plc, a residential property business, spent the morning with Caritas Anchor House residents to support them with employability skills. The session began with a presentation skills workshop, and was followed by one-to-one support focused on practical interview tips and mock interviews.

Staff at Caritas Anchor House also hosted a skills session, where residents were asked to reflect on the areas that were holding them back in their job search. This could include the quality of their CV, or a lack of skills or confidence. Staff worked with the residents to review their CV’s, plan to develop these areas, and support them in finding appropriate employment.

There were also e-learning opportunities available on the day for those interested in Health and Safety and First Aid – both of which are key for the majority of our residents seeking employment.

In the afternoon, the team from Grainger Plc put on a BBQ for all the residents, volunteers and staff who took part in the day.

“Securing employment is a key objective for our residents and is a vital stepping stone to overcoming homelessness,” said Caritas Anchor House Chief Executive Keith Fernett.

“We are thankful to Grainger Plc for donating their time today and supporting our residents to get noticed by potential employers. It’s wonderful to see Grainger plc taking an interest our community and using their skills to help the less fortunate.”

Speaking of the day, Caritas Anchor House resident Shaun Kennedy, said “I really enjoyed the one-to-one interview skills sessions and it was helpful to recreate what an interview would be like. I’ve taken away some good nerve-busting tips which I know will help me in the future.”

“This has been a thoroughly rewarding experience” said Alex Roger, Senior Refurbishment Manager of Grainger Plc. “The residents who we met with have great potential and with the right guidance and support can achieve great things”.

Give and Gain Day, the UK’s only national day of employee volunteering, is an initiative started by Business in the Community and aims to connect skilled professionals with community organisations by pairing them with a volunteering project. Last year, the day attracted 19,000 UK business volunteers who spent 132,500 hours helping hundreds of thousands of people across communities.
