Creating opportunities for locals at The Good Hotel

26th February 2018
We talked to Jason*, a resident of Caritas Anchor House, about his placement at The Good Hotel and what he is learning from this opportunity.

Jason has been at Caritas Anchor House since July 2016, joining us after a long period of sofa surfing and instability in his life. After finding his feet he began working on his employability, and has taken part in a several work placements to find the right area and environment for him.

Jason is currently taking part in training at The Good Hotel, located in London’s Royal Victoria Docks, on the River Thames. He began the training three weeks ago, and so far has thoroughly enjoying the learning curve and friendly atmosphere. The training precedes a three month placement, where Jason will gain valuable hands-on experience in the hospitality industry.

Placements such as these offer more than an immediate employment experience, they help individuals to grow in confidence, shape their interests and make informed decisions about future career choices. Jason said, “It’s more than a job - we have been learning about ourselves, our likes and dislikes, about our capabilities and potential, and what we’re good at”

As part of Caritas Anchor House’s Employment, Training and Education Programme (ETE), we arrange placements with partners such as The Good Hotel, providing our residents with new and varied opportunities. We ensure there are always opportunities for residents to attain new skills and experiences which build a positive mind-set, an appetite to learn, and improve future prospects.

Alba Rodriquez, Brand Trainer and Activator at The Good Hotel, said, “Jason* is doing very well in his training and we’re confident that he is going to pass to the next stage with three months’ work experience. We’re pleased to have him as part of the group and wish him all the best in his career within the hospitality industry.”

The Good Hotel is a social enterprise which combines business with doing good, and reinvests all its profits. It prides itself on offering local long-term unemployed people, including Caritas Anchor House residents, opportunities for training and integration into the community and job market.
