Working at the heart of homelessness

Congratulations and thank you to Gavin!

Our News in Brief

Congratulations and thank you to Gavin!

23rd April 2018
Huge congratulations to Gavin Kendall, who ran the London Marathon yesterday and raised vital funds for Caritas Anchor House, whilst taking on biggest physical challenge of his life.

The London Marathon is one of the most iconic sporting events in the country. It is an incredible achievement and demonstration of endurance and commitment. On Sunday 22nd April 2018, over 40,000 runners took to the streets of London, but this is not just a sporting event – in 2017 a record-breaking £61.5 million was raised for charity.

This year we were honoured to have Gavin taking on his first marathon while raising funds for Caritas Anchor House’s work to rebuild the lives of homeless people.

Gavin works for McCormacks Law, who are also based in Newham, where one in every 25 people are homeless - the highest percentage in the country. He regularly comes into contact with vulnerable adults and those at risk, or even directly affected by homelessness in his job, and through hearing their stories he also heard about Caritas Anchor House.

After learning more about our services and the people we empower and support, he began to admire the work that we do. Gavin said, “I have seen first-hand how people who are otherwise marginalised by society are given the ‘leg-up’ they need by Caritas Anchor House; how people having the belief in them makes such a huge difference, and impacts enormously on people being able to once again make their own way in life.”

Gavin completed his 26.2 miles in a fantastic 5 hours 51 minutes, and raised over £2,500 for which we are incredibly grateful. You can still donate to his JustGiving page here:

After the race, Gavin said, “I am so grateful for the incredible support from Caritas Anchor House and McCormacks, plus friends and family, colleagues past and present. It was a really great day and I feel elated with the money that’s been raised!”
