When a class of Year 11 pupils at Sarah Bonnell School in Stratford were asked by their teacher to choose a local charity to support as part of their citizenship class, they really took the task to heart. Deciding on Anchor House, an award winning residential and life skills centre for homeless people based in East London, the class worked together to organise a number of events designed to raise money and promote awareness of the serious issue of homelessness.

Students organised a food drive, collecting variety of tinned and canned goods that will go directly to the Anchor House residents and also arranged a non-uniform day, cake sale and classroom collections, resulting in the students raising a fantastic £1,900 for Anchor House.

“I was very impressed at how much the students had achieved and would like to say again how grateful we at Anchor House are for all their hard work,” said Community Fundraiser Stephen Watson, who visited the school to thank them for their efforts. “We hope their example will inspire others to get involved and help to make a difference.”

Based in Canning Town in Newham - the third most deprived borough in the country - Anchor House provides help and support to up to 220 homeless people each year, giving them a stable and safe environment in which to develop their potential and build up confidence and self-esteem, enabling them to move on to leading independent, self-fulfilling lives.

In the coming weeks, the students involved in the fundraising will have the opportunity to visit to Anchor House, where they will be given a tour of the facilities and be able to meet residents that they have worked to help.

“It’s wonderful to see young people being so engaged with local issues,” said Keith Fernett, Director of Anchor House. “In the current economic climate, the problem of homelessness is more pressing than ever and communities must work together to support those most in need.”
