Catholic charities praised at thanksgiving mass

21st June 2016
Every day, millions of people around the world are helped by Catholic charities. In recognition of their good work, Caritas Anchor House attended a thanksgiving Mass on Saturday 11 June, where Archbishop Peter Smith praised the transformative work undertaken by those charities.

The Mass, in St George’s Cathedral, was organised by Your Catholic Legacy - a consortium of 26 charities working to inspire and encourage supporters to leave a gift in their will to a Catholic charity.

Archbishop Peter Smith, a patron of Caritas Anchor House, said, “During my time as a priest and bishop, I have been privileged to see first-hand the effort and expertise Catholic charities and Church networks put into caring for the most vulnerable members of society.

“Catholic causes rely upon the kindness and generosity of the Catholic community to fund their life-saving and life-changing work. Legacies – no matter how small – play a crucial role in this funding. Legacies help to give hope to thousands and share God’s love in time of crisis.”

Following the Mass, speakers Barry and Margaret Mizen spoke of ‘For Jimmy’, a charity dedicated to their son Jimmy, who was murdered in 2008. They set up the charity to build a legacy of hope and peace in Jimmy’s memory, and asked the guests to consider what they could do to help transform the future of those around us.

Chief Executive of Caritas Anchor House, Keith Fernett, said “It was wonderful to see so many people come together to celebrate the work of Catholic charities. Legacies, large or small, help to make the world a better place for those in need.

“Caritas Anchor House provides a home and support to over 210 homeless people each year, and without the generosity of our supporters, we would not be able to help as many people as we do, and for that we are extremely grateful.”
