Caritas Anchor House supports the Festival of Learning

22nd June 2016
The Festival of Learning is a national celebration of lifelong learning, and in 2016, has run throughout May and June.

The Festival aims to highlight the benefits of further education and encourage adults, whatever their age or background, to discover how learning can transform their lives.

Caritas Anchor House offers a home and support to over 210 homeless people each year, many of whom have little or no formal education. We believe that education and training are vital stepping stones in helping homeless and vulnerable people to rebuild their lives, and so have developed our Education, Training and Employment (ETE) Programme for residents and service users.

We encourage residents to engage with our ETE services, which include ESOL, literacy, numeracy, customer service skills, tenancy support, various e-learning courses and CV writing.

One resident who has benefited from our ETE programme is Sarah. Sarah left her home as a result of domestic abuse, and after spending time in a women’s refuge, came to Caritas Anchor House in March 2016.

Sarah was determined to regain her confidence and work towards employment, and so consistently attended IT sessions, completed training in Health and Safety and First Aid, and enrolled on a fashion course at Newham College.

Sarah applied for Pret a Manger’s apprenticeship scheme online, and was invited to an interview and work trial – which she passed! Sarah is now a part-time member of the team at the Canary Wharf branch. She joins over 200 people who have experienced homelessness or offending who have secured jobs across different parts of Pret’s business, from front-of-house to IT, since the scheme started.

“I was so happy to have got the job at Pret,” said Sarah. “By completing the training courses at Caritas Anchor House, I got my confidence back and realised that I can succeed. Working at Pret is such a confidence booster and I’m learning so many new things on the job!”
