Caritas Anchor House Hosts Dancing Round Canning Town

18th October 2018
The Exhibition of Dancing Round Canning Town will take place on Tuesday 20th November from 6 – 8:30pm at Caritas Anchor House

Catalyst in Communities and Stretch have joined forces to create a local history digital archival project called 'Dancing Round Canning Town', thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

We’re pleased to announce that the final Exhibition is being hosted at Caritas Anchor House this November. Guests will be able to gain a never-before-seen insight into the history of our building and the lives of those living and visiting Newham over the years, through a series of video stories and displays.

Formerly a seaman’s mission, Anchor House was established in 1962 by the Catholic London Inter-Diocesan Council of the Apostleship of the Sea. The original purpose was to provide temporary accommodation to out-of-work seafarers coming into and out of the nearby ports, but 1969 saw the closure of the London Docks as the industrial landscape and borough began to change.

The Exhibition will share the history and stories from local people about the old Canning Town Dancehall from 1960s-80s, which was situated in Anchor House. The seafarers on leave let their hair down and danced the night away with local residents, and new and lasting friendships were formed.
