Caritas Anchor House honoured at TELCO awards

8th December 2016
Caritas Anchor House is delighted to have won the Biggest Win with Citizens UK category at TELCO's Delegates Assembly and Annual Meeting.

The award was won jointly with St Anthony’s Primary School, in Forest Gate, in recognition of our successful campaigning for affordable housing on the Boleyn Ground development - the former home of West Ham United.

Initial plans for the housing development showed that only 51 of the 838 units (6%) would be affordable. There is an acute lack of housing in Newham, and so over 12 months Caritas Anchor House worked alongside partner organisations to encourage the council to recognise the need and increase the levels of affordable housing.

In April 2016, following our successful campaign, the London Borough of Newham committed to invest £90 million in the site, meaning 25% of development would be made up of affordable homes.

Keith Fernett, Chief Executive of Caritas Anchor House, said, "I am delighted that Caritas Anchor House's affordable housing campaign has been recognised with the Biggest Win award.

“The determination of our residents and staff ensured the campaigns success, and will leave a lasting legacy for the community in Newham. I would also like to thank St Antony’s Primary School and Newham Citizens - it goes to show we are stronger when we work together."

During the awards event, TELCO - a local chapter of Citizens UK - celebrated 20 years of people power in East London and set out its vision for the future. The event also recognised other local chapters who have achieved outstanding things this year.
