Bringing together a community through sports

30th January 2019
On Thursday 24th January we hosted the launch of Bonny Downs’ Active 4 Life project, run in partnership with Caritas Anchor House and NEWway!

The Active 4 Life project began with the aim of tackling the physical inactivity in Newham, particularly for those experiencing homelessness and poverty. This unique project, funded by Sport England, encourages everyone to be active for at least 30 minutes a week to improve health and wellbeing, while building networks, confidence and a sense of purpose.

We were delighted to welcome so many community members, residents and staff, as well as partner organisations to mark the launch of the project at Caritas Anchor House. The celebrations centred around our two table tennis tables and circuit training areas, encouraging guests to take part in physical activity while connecting with others and sharing their stories.

Amanda Dubarry, Chief Executive, said, “This project is already having a positive impact on our residents, with everyone enjoying the table tennis and circuit training sessions. There’s been many games of table tennis with one another and any passing staff member who is willing!

“The benefit of the activities is not just the physical activity, but also the fun of being involved, which is really important for resident’s wellbeing and sense of belonging.

“We are looking forward to continuing this partnership into the future and welcoming members of the community into Caritas Anchor House to get active.”

Attendees heard from Peter Laing, Chief Executive of Bonny Downs, who shared the vision and purpose of the project, and how it has been brought alive through a collaborative effort across Bonny Downs, Caritas Anchor House and NEWway. We also heard from two volunteers from the project, both of whom have lived experience of homelessness, and their personal testimonies on how taking part in sports activities really can change lives for the better.

Jack Harrison, who is heading up the project from Bonny Downs, said, “The launch event at Caritas Anchor House was a great success. It was wonderful to see engagement from the Newham community and enthusiasm from all the attendees who joined in.

“We are looking forward to our weekly visits to host sessions here, and hope to see lots of new and old faces benefiting from regular exercise, comradery, and friendships.”

The free activities are now taking place every week at Caritas Anchor House and Bobby Moore Pavilion. You can see the timetable of activities below - they are all free and do not require registration.
