BioMed Give and Gain at Anchor House

28th May 2013

Anchor House recently marked the sixth annual Give and Gain Day with a visit from ten very enthusiastic volunteers from BioMed Central, a scientific publisher of 252 open access, online, peer-reviewed journals.

The volunteers ran a CV employability workshop in the morning, holding 1:1 sessions with Anchor House residents and giving them useful advice on how to improve their CVs and get noticed by employers. Following this, the group got stuck in preparing burgers, sausages, chicken and salad for a delicious afternoon BBQ.

“The day was a great success,” said Anchor House Director Keith Fernett. “The residents in the CV workshop received some great help and the BBQ proved to be very popular with everyone. It’s wonderful to see companies taking an interest in community projects and using their skills to help the less fortunate.”

Give and Gain Day, the UK’s only national day of employee volunteering, is an initiative started by Business in the Community and aims to connect skilled professionals with community organisations by pairing them with a volunteering project. This year, the day attracted over 12,000 business volunteers from over 300 companies, amounting to a stunning 96,000 hours spent helping hundreds of thousands of people across UK communities. Next year’s Give and Gain Day will take place on Friday 16 May 2014, and you can register your interest here.
