The Barking Belles run 5K for Anchor House in Hyde Park

Barking Belles 11 Sept 2011

About 3 months ago a group of female staff at Anchor House signed up to do the 14thadidas Women’s 5k Challenge in Hyde Park on Sunday 11th September 2011.  The run is a fun opportunity for women of all ages and fitness levels to enjoy themselves,  get fit and raise money for charity.   It is the biggest fun run for women in the UK and last year over 30,000 women took part.

The Anchor House staff who had signed up to do the run then invited female residents to take up the challenge and the response was very heartening.  Having accepted the challenge, they had to train and make sure we all had the right kit.  Anne Tyler, Brentwood business woman and founder of on-line hosiery company Essexy Legs, kindly sponsored the team t-shirts for our newly christened team, The Barking Belles.

The Barking Belles team was made up of 9 female staff and 5 female residents. They even had their very own cheerleading team made up of 3 residents and one local community member to support them.  They arrived at Hyde Park in the warm Autumn sunshine, surrounded by thousands of other women in brightly coloured t-shirts all supporting their own charity.

The team members finished the run between 20minutes to over an hour, but they were all winners. That is particularly so for one of our residents who spotted her son along the way, who afterwards told her how proud he was of her for completing the challenge, but more importantly for actively turning her life around.

At the end of the race, when the skies darkened and the rain fell, the spirits of The Barking Belles couldn’t be dampened.  The team felt elated and are already planning another run next year!

So far The Barking Belles have raised over £800 for Anchor House and still counting! If you would like to sponsor the team, please visit our JustGiving page. It’s not too late!
